JazzMN Big Band 2009-10 Concert Series

Ernie Watts, saxophone

Ernie Watts isn't just a great saxophone player; he's an incredible player. He has performed with everyone from Buddy Rich and Doc Severinsen’s Tonight Show Band to Pat Metheny, Arturo Sandoval, Steely Dan and Frank Zappa. Ernie will bring his unbelievable talent to to our opening concert next season.

 

Dave Karr, Dale Mendenhall and Pete Whitman

We’re in for quite a treat when we unleash the talent of JazzMN stalwarts Dave Karr, Dale Mendenhall and Pete Whitman. These gifted artists will be showcased both with the big band and in combo settings. Come hear our tenors sing.

 

Fred Sturm, Grammy-nominated Composer

Composer Fred Sturm is a true musical leader of our time. His jazz ensembles at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music have been cited nine times by Downbeat as the finest in the United States. Fred's compositions and arrangements have been performed by jazz ensembles, symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, and chamber groups worldwide, featuring renowned artists Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry and Phil Woods.

 

Bobby Shew, trumpet

We conclude our JazzMN season featuring the great Bobby Shew. You won’t hear a more musical player than Bobby. He can burn and scream with the best of them, then turn around and play a ballad that will melt your heart. Bobby will take us out for a ride and bring us back home with his straight-ahead swing.
